burning smell from new fire rated spotlights

Hi.
Ive just had 10 fire rated spot lights installed in a kitchen moderisation. They are 50w gu10s. When the lights are turned on, each one gives off a burning smouldering type of smell. Not really strong smelling bit still noticeable once lights are warm. the lights are just hanging as waiting for ceiling to be plastered.

There is no tripping of the mcb and all 1.5mm cables are not hot and all connections are tight and correct.

Just want some reassurance everything is ok as dont want to get ceiling plastered if there is a fault.

Before you have the ceiling plastered you have the opportunity to do a better job with the lighting in your kitchen. A lot of posters on here don't like the use of down-lighters to illuminate large areas because they are not designed for the job. You have 10 that's 500 watts that will not do a very good job of lighting and will produce significant heat as you are now noticing.

I have just fitted one of these in my mother in laws new kitchen and it is really good with under cupboard lights.

Using warm white tubes gives a very nice soft light that really is very good. It is also cheap to run and no risk of burning the house down.

Hi, had the same problem previously.

you will probably find it is the flex inside the downlighter.

when you push the bulb up into the housing, the flex is supposed to also push back through the entry hole, so all the slack cable is on the outside of the downlighter... but it doesnt always do that..instead it curls up inside the downlighter and gets hot and starts burning.

So now, I always make a point of easing the flex cable through the entry hole as I push the bulb up... but mine dont get hot now, as I switched to some LED Bulbs.. not the usual type though..those are pretty much useless.. these are 4.9W and put out the equivalent of 45w halogen light each.

But they are stated to last 3 years, although can probably get 5+ years out of them being they are LED.
