Not a plea for help, but I was testing continuity of my upstairs ring final today after removing a socket from it. Line was broken, and traced it to this:

It's a bit blurred, but the red conductor is badly burnt and open circuit.
Also noted the bell-wire going to an old clock point. Now also removed.

(The wallpaper is also not long for this world  )

Spot on. The 2.5 mm² cable is an extension to the ring to serve a double socket in the kitchen into which a washing machine was plugged. Not only was that terminal burnt, but the 'new' cable was very twisted, junction boxes wired like spaghetti, no earth sleeving.

I wonder how long it has been like that, and being a ring of course, no symptoms.

Yup - the whole ring circuit has gone now and been replaced by 3 new radials.

Well not really that fast - I found that fault after first fix of the new radial circuits while decomissioning the old ring one socket/room at a time (1 room = 1 single socket!).
The radials were ready in the wings all along!
