Burnt plastic!

Is it melted air freshener stuck to the surface (a lump that needs removing) or have the chemicals from the air freshener melted the car plastic and left you with a hole that needs filling?
It looks like there has been significant heating or solvent action here....I’d look for replacement cowls I think.
I shudder to think how an air freshener overheated!

Probably requires a similar solvent like nail varnish remover [not the water-based variety].

A car interiors repairers would be able to sort that out but it might be cheaper to replace, then again there'll be some labour to replace them and that doesn't look like a cheap car.
A Merc me thinks.
My first go to for any sticky stuff is WD40, a lot of people have it hanging around, and it doesn't cause any damage to the plastic - it may not help, but it won't hurt to have a go?
But on a second look, it does seem to have eaten into the surface

New cowls only real answer
If it was my car I would be looking at getting a replacement from a Mercedes breaker (assuming it's a Merc). Plenty of specialists who just break specific marques. I imagine there are plenty of cowls available as I can't see it being a part with high demand. Many breakers offer mail order these days - gone are the fun days of clambering over piles of wrecks.
As above, does look like it's melted/eaten into the actual plastic of the cowl. Just be thankful the freshner wasn't in contact with the main dash or other more expensive/difficult to replace parts.
