I want to take mains out to my garden pond to power a waterfall pump – is this the kind of tubing I should be using to bury the cable in?

Thanks :D

No. Entirely unsuitable.

Armoured cable would be the usual choice.

Thanks! Guess I can't get that from SF... don't think I saw any there?

The situation is actually slightly more complicated than mentioned... there's an existing piece of cable sticking out of the ground (looks armoured, as you say) where a light used to be and ideally I want to make a junction with that, and lead the new bit to a different part of the garden...

Thanks - don't know why my searches didn't find that  OK final question if you don't mind... are there special kinds of junction boxes and so on for that kind of cable too?

Thanks, that's really useful :notworthy:

As per the poster above, use Wiska boxes with the optional earthing kit, and the correct size of CW type SWA gland and you will have a robust solution. Remember that the armour should be connected to earth at least at one end.

Use the correct type of gland for whatever new cable is being run in to feed the new stuff.

Is the existing cable 2 cores or 3 cores?

Check the SWA connection at the house end to make sure its still intact and done correctly.

Haven't had a good look at it in a while now, will have to refresh my memory, but it's definitely 3 core. It'll date from the early 90s, yet I seem to remember it's red, black, and green/yellow... that seems like a mixture of the old and new colour codes to me, but what do I know.

Anyway, I'll pull the fuse and check it all out. It's connected to a wall light switch in the house...

The last time I built a log cabin the electrician insisted that we dig 600mm deep trenches for the SWA (the client didn't want it clipped to the fence).

Going through that process shortly, but the presence of a badger which continually re-digs holes to get under the fence raises the question whether clipping the SWA to the fence is the better option. Can badgers chew though SWA?

Blup

Er, where has the OP said the joint is to be buried? The cable is currently sticking out of the ground.

A word from the OP... fact is, I'm not sure. It's sticking out of the ground, but possibly not enough to render burying unnecessary...
The more I look into this project, the more I may just diconnect it at the mains end and forget about it

I watched a video of the resin joint, whch plays just after the other one that HWK posted
