I have an exposed 15mm copper pipe running down the side of my chimney breast suppling gas to an inset gas fire. It is my intention to chase the wall and bury the pipework in plaster. I am going to wrap the pipe (which is jointless other then the 90 degree elbow where it passes through the brickwork) in self amalgamating tape. Is this i.e. the tape, acceptable.

thanks in anticipation

i do not think burying a pipe carrying gas is a good idea, but hey, its not my house

please explain why as Im really having a hard time understanding why you think that a surface mounted pipe is any less of a hazard than a buried pipe (not to mention asthetics). I appreciate that maybe it is at risk from having a nail or similar knocked through it at later date but in this instance its on the side of a chimney breast and im hardly likely to be hanging a picture or something there. I also appreciate that a visual inspection would be impossible without disturbing the plaster again but in reality who really ever visually inspects their gas pipes that are under floors, in ceiling voids etc anyway if there isnt a problem? Maybe there is some other reason why you think it is not advisable or some regulation.
Please dont take this as a confrontational post, its not meant to be - I am genuinely interested in your (or anyone elses) thoughts.

Thanks again

No reason why it shouldn't run in a chase. Reg's say it needs to be protected from corrosion, wrapping with tape would do that. The wrapping needs to extend 25mm beyond the corrosive material (plaster).

The installation must pass a tightness test before you wrap any pipes.

in new house builds u find gas pipes ( plastic coated ) buried in the walls as u say there is nothing on the walls to let u know it is there the regs say as long as it is fully coated in plastic and fully covered with plaster is it ok

the gas lads love these as they are inevitably a magnet for nails etc keeping them in work

anyone contemplating nailing a hole in a wall should invest in one of them pipe tracer
