I have a butterfly roof and no visible loft hatch. I want to open it up for storage and fit a hatch and ladder from the small landing which is only 140cm x 150cm. It is a 1900s small terrace in London.

I would probably get a tradesperson to fit it as I am not too keen on cutting roof joists and fitting the frame myself . I also need the ladder to be solid as I am dont want to take risks climbing so close to the stairwell.

I am thinking of getting a ladder that is attached to the hatch and fits into the roof space but I am not too sure if a folding ladder will fit or what type I should order considering the lack of space both on the landing and in the sloping loft.

Any advice ?

Pictures as ever please. You can get a 3 part extending ladder from Wickes or Screwfix that would attach to the inside of the loft, and once extended will be solid. This is all doable for a reasonably competent person though.

There is nothing to photgraph except a flat ceiling. There is no existing hatch. Thats the problem

Sorry, you were worried about the stairwell, and the picture would also be from the outside, to give a rough idea of the roof etc. But that's fine.

First job is poke a hole in the ceiling (between joists) so you can see what is up there. Pretty much anything is possible but you may find there isn't enough usable space up there to make it worth the effort. While you're up there, see how much insulation there is......
