Hi All

Do you guys have any idea of how much I should be paying per metre length for planed 3" x 3" solid oak - I only need about 4 m but my usual timber merchants have come back with a price of £300 + VAT for a 2.6m length!!!

I have bought 2" x 2" recently for about £14 inc VAT so it seems like a hell of a jump!!!

Can you recommend any other suppliers in NW London area?

Thanks guys!

a sleeper is that cheap because its unseasoned oak and normally the waste from the tree. a lump of 75 x 75 4m long is a tall order to cut from one tree (no pun)

Breezer - I wasn't offering them just a comparison do they not do sleepers in NW London then? £300 for that section seemed a lot.I paid £50 ish for a larger beam. Not in NW London though.

I always get my seasoned oak from a sawmill rather than a timber merchant. It is usually a load cheaper, sustainable and with a bit of research you usually get the choice of kiln or air seasoned. Also the experience of buying it is a whole load better, usually. You'd be suprised how many small sawmills there are just outside the M25, give it a try, look in the yellow pages.
