I have the opportunity to buy an original (with providence) degas watercolour for my wife's birthday. I have been given a price but how on Earth can I verify it's true value????

I see some of the degas stuff has realised over 13 million. I'd be easier to talk too.
When their framed they'll look a lot nicer to the discerning eye.

Because he corrected your spelling. Also, it's the first time nausey's been right about anything.

Be very, very, wary of anything that's too good to be true. Provenance can be faked too remember.
Have a look on Google or similar at "Degas watercolour fake" There seem to be a lot around.
You need to get the opinion (and pay for it I expect) of someone who is an expert on Degas.

Depends whether you are buying as an investment, or as something nice to look at whilst hanging on your wall.

Some people will pay lots of money for a row of coloured dots, because it was painted by someone who once pickled a cow.

The same people will pay lots of money for an 'unmade bed'.

The same people will pay lots of money for a light that flashes on & off.

After you're dead they may be worth millions!
