Hi I have a extractor fan in the bathroom with the wire brown(L) and blue (N) and these wires go into a timer with a circuit board that says output. And another wire that's coming from the ceiling light with the wires, brown, black and grey. And they go into the circuit board on an area that says input L,LT,N. Brown goes into L and black into LT and grey into N. I want to bypass the timer and make it so the fan turns on and off with the light switch because right now the timer is broken and the fan will stay on for 2 hours .

What I've tried:
I tried removing the wires from the timer and joining brown to brown and blue to grey and leaving black but nothing happens.

I've done brown with brown and black with brie and left grey out but that just made the lights stays on I then tried black with blue and left grey out and it blew the fuse box.

Since the box also has a transformer and the fan is 12 volt, one would need the manual, as no idea if the switching is on the low or extra low voltage side, I would test the light wires, or look where connected, remove the permanent line and put it in a spare connector for future use, then put a bridge from switched line to permanent line connection, then is should work with no run on, but then likely not comply with building regulations, so could fail next EICR.

If the issue is that the timer is not timing out, then you could just remove the conductor thats in L and make safe in a connector block, and fit a link to L from LT, so that both the supply to the unit and the trigger for the timer are made live from the switchwire.

However, as you appear to have already linked the 240v input to the outgoing cable to the fan which was previously in the terminals labeled 12V output, then chances are the fan itself will only be fit for the dustbin now, so you might as well just buy yourself a new ELV fan kit and replace both....

P.S. I have a bit of a quandary, I'm not sure whether its the painting or the mini-trunking that has the worst finish.....

What are the chances I have ruined the fan? Cuz the fuse box blew a few times

Quite likely, connect it all as it was before and see if it still comes on

Hi guys thanks for the responses so I connected the fan up as it was and it works fine so in order to make it turn on and off with the light itself I need to remove L and place a wire that goes in both L and LT correct and when you say out the wire that in L in a connector block what do you mean exactly. Sorry I don't know much about electrics my experience with electrics has been trying to fix it trying a bunch of random things and the end product usually is a broken machine

Thanks you for the steps it worked the fan now works with the light. I was wondering if you could explain the mechanism as to how putting an extra wire in L and LT turned it to work with the lights

Thanks

Well, it's not an extra wire; it is an alternative wire - the one which switches off with the light rather than remaining powered permanently to work the timer.
