The latest woke nonsense is that the Church of England is setting up a £100 million fund to pay reparations for slavery. Give me strength!

Who are they going to pay it to? Slavery in Britain was abolished two hundred years ago so there are no slaves left. I would prefer the CofE did something useful with the money like employing more vicars or setting up some kind of enterprise that employs people; restoring churches; building (good quality) houses on their land etc etc.

The Guardian news(?)paper is giving £10 million of its money too. Mugs.

If you'd watched the episode taking account of the British Empire's disastrous response to the Irish Famine of 1848 and the 1857 Indian Mutiny in 'History of Britain' last night, you'd realise just how much damage was done by the complacent arrogance of the British Civil Service.
Of course, the campaign for the abolition of slavery was a noble cause, but the root cause of poverty was simply ignored at the expense of the stockbroker's profit margin...which hasn't changed much since then.
No slavery in Britain, you say: are you certain?

And that is where the money should go. Too those who need help now.

Shame that our footballers supported modern slavery.

In the entire history of the world, Britain, with it Christianity; its Empire and its Industrial Revolution is the country that has done the most for the advancement of civilisation. We have a glorious history, but it is a "warts and all" history, and there is a hard core of troublemakers who are only interested in the warts.

In this talk of reparation there is never mention of what Britain spent in ending the slave trade. We patrolled the seas, capturing boats and freeing many thousands of slaves, and for a long time. Britain spent over 1 per cent of its GDP each year for several decades doing this; what more reparations can be due after all that? Surely we, as a country in a spot of bother at the moment, are due for some payback from the people we helped?

There are said to be slavery type goings in in certain parts, but that is due to government failure, nothing to do with the British public, the CofE or our ancestors.
