Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced cable detector, I have lots of drilling to do around the house and want to make sure that I don’t drill into any of our wiring.

Kind Regards.

They are all a bit hit and miss, whatever you do, make sure you understand safe zones first (check the wiki).

Thanks, will have a look a look at the Wiki, would still appreciate a suggested make, thanks.

Kind Regards

I have tried three now, all useless, unreliable.

They tell lies or tell you something is there, when it isn't. Probably designed using a politician as a template.

I have a really rubbish one from B&Q, it indicates live when held directly over a light switch, but when I follow the routes indicated on the safe zones in the Wiki as suggested by Rjm2k, nothing. Am I to understand that they are not a useful piece of kit in the tool box??

I have a zircon a rapid test and a black and decker with laser level plus a multi from lidl or aldi. The zircon is probably best followed by b&d then rapid test. The lidl or aldi one is even more waste of time than the rest. I wouldn't count on any of them being reliable.

The cables are more than likely in the safe zone, just too deep in plaster/capping/conduit etc for the detector to detect
