I saw an advert some time ago in a trade magazine, for a metal frame which is used for either carrying cable reels (tw & e); or for supporting the reels, for easy reeling off of the cables. I can't find the advert again, are these easily available?

try electrical wholesaler. last job i was at, there was a stool. was ideal for the cables. it easily held 2 reels (altho it needed a roll of 1.5 on the back to balance it)

why not put a length of conduit in an electricians pipe bender's vice the same as people have done for yearas, or if you dont have one, make one, mcuh easier.

if you are in say a loft, cut a bit of cable, thread it through drum and fix it to joist, even cheaper

its just as easy to make use of what you have....

£37 squid, on yer bike.

3 peices of wood, a peice of wardrobe hanging rail and 2 safety clips made from coat hanger.

We didn't have the luxury of store bought tools, we made our own.

On a serious note - if you make your own, and it collapses or fails and causes damage or injury, you'll be in deep doo-doo...

Think you will be in the doo-daa, even if a bought one collapses

Provided it conforms to the appropriate standards, CE marked, you've used it as directed, not overloaded or misused it, inspected it for damage before each use etc etc then AFAIK you will not be held responsible for injuries etc if it fails.

Been (racking) my brains out to try and think of a possible accident concerning a cable reel holder??

falls over/breaks/collapses with large wooden reel of 10/16mm² on it - reel lands on employee's foot? (or yours and put you off work for a few days)

Or in the loft, and the reel rolls out of the hatch onto someone's head and kills them?

OK - all very unlikely I know, but reels of cable are heavy, and to fart about bodging your own handling equipment out of old broomsticks and coathangers to save £37 seems an unnecessary risk.

Plus how long would it take to make one, set against how long it would take to earn £37 less the tax you won't have to pay as it's an expense?

1: you should have safety shoes on

2: possible, but could happen anyway

3 - can be a lot easier makin a temporary stand from what you have

4 - doesnt take long. can be made in a few ins (most of the time

my guess, not even a customer service 'happy to help you badge'. :)

BAs he did say three pieces of wood as well as the hangers and coat rail.

In fact I made one from some 2x2 built into two A frame shapes joined together at the bottom with a hole in the top of the A for a bit of Hep2O 15mm pipe. The frame is only high enough and wide enough for a roll of 100m of T&E so not very high and just about impossible to topple over.
