Recently I have bought some 2.5mm twin and earth to add some sockets to my ring main. The cable grey outer covering has a 2.5 marking on it however when I strip to copper and check the diameter with a vernier I get a reading of just under 2mm. Is this similar to joinery where wood is bought as say 2" Par (planed all round) and the finished size of the wood you buy is more like 1 and 3/4"

The reason you are getting confused is the cable size (2.5mm2) is refereing to Cross Sectional Area (CSA) of the conductor, NOT its overall diameter. Hope this helps.
