Hi all,

Im building a cake stand (like this http://www.thehouseofsmiths.com/2011/08/diy-stenciled-cake-stand.html) for the wife's cake business and was wondering where i could get some wood or mdf (about 9 inches sq) where the edges have already been routered for the top of the stand like in the image?

Any ideas? Many thanks in advance!

if you're not wanting to make it yourself, you might want to try places that make trophies/awards. The do stuff like that for the bases they stick trophies to.

Just a thought

Makes for a good excuse to buy a cheap router and a selection of cutters to have a play around with.

heeelllooo and welcome RickiC :D :D :D

do not use mdf unless you can keep it 98% dry
no wetting no washing no moisture laden cakes

quite often cheap chopping boards made from beech then shaped can be your best option

Hi all,

Thanks for all the replies.

Some excellent suggestions there that i hadnt considered!

You might also think about whether MDF is safe to be in direct contact with food. There is some discussion of MDF safety generally (not specifically food, though) here:

http://www.hse.gov.uk/woodworking/faq-mdf.htm

At one point I was considering making a pizza peel from it, and that page put me off.

MDF is fairly nasty to work with as well, it idea of using a cheap chopping board and trimming it down is a good one I think.

Obviously you could buy your own beech, or even just cheap pine/deal, but you would then have to join it into a board.
