Hi,

My 04 206 drives fine, however, when I draw to a complete halt, (still in previous gear) or select neutral & lift clutch when sat in traffic. It is unusually difficult to select first.

I can select first, but it takes quite some force.

If I select first whilst still in motion (less than walking pace) it will slip into gear perfectly.

Does this sound like a sychromesh issue?

I'd be very surprised is it was your synchromesh tbh.

More likley to be either the Cable (? think there cable on 206). First step(and cheapest!) would be replace cable. If its Hydrulic (I really cant recall!) then just bleed the clutch with fresh fluid may well help.

A long shot may be to change the gear oil but other then that you may need a new clutch.

Good Luck

Try engaging reverse, if it crunches the clutch isn't disengaging properly.

The true test for clutch issues!
There could be wear on the synchro hub here, but its unusual on first gear unless your car has a history of driving school use  where all sorts of transmission horrors take place.
Synchro on 2nd gear is usually the one to pack up on these. Is the gearstick particularly sloppy, due to linkage wear? If the gears engage nicely when the engine is off then the clutch could be to blame. John :)

Yes, reverse selects ok, once I have selected first, it will slip in & out fine until I lift the clutch in neutral & attempt to re-engage first.

No history of driving school, car only has 27k on clock (genuine), gearstick feels nice & tight.

It is still under warranty & I have taken it back with this concern & they took it to a garage & gearbox "specialist" who couldn't find anything wrong, they checked the clutch & lubricated the linkages. I don't think they quite grasped what I was trying to tell them TBH.

It does sound like a clutch issue then.....is there any sign of a clunk or noisy engagement in either first or reverse, after dipping the clutch? J :)

Could be the selector dog in the gearbox that is either worn or damaged, to replace these is an expensive job and specialist tools would be required.

No clunking as such, other than what you would expect given the reasonable force required to select first - reverse is fine.

It doesn't really bother me, as long as I select first before drawing to a complete halt & it hasn't got any worse since July.

I just thought it would make sense to get to the bottom of it while it's under warranty.

I might take it to Peugeot & see what they think.

Thanks to all who contributed.

If you bought the car from Peugeot, make sure that your findings are recorded - it could help if there's a problem later. If you bought from an independent trader I think the warranty would be less valuable.
John :)

gearbox failures are very common on these, my girlfriends 206 loses 1st and 2nd sometimes at a junction, usually shifting across into reverse or 4th brings them back!
The box is also very notchy and can be difficult to engage
