can anyone give me ideas please?
I would like a light bright enough to read by and also a very low light , just enough to see to get up for the toilet.

we will have an electric supply as well as batteries.

and.... at the risk of being laughed at.... does the length of your cable affect the power or not?
please resist the urge to take the p i ss... this is a serious question.

We have 2, a camping gaz lantern which is very bright and fine for reading. The bigger the brighter. Also a lantern that takes 4 batteries which isn't too bright but good for getting changed by etc. The battery one has a magnetic back and comes with a metal plate so that you can 'attach' it to the side or the roof of your tent.

Lead length will not affect brightness but I wouldn't use a lamp with a lead as it's just one more thing to trip over.

Have you looked a head-torches. These are good for both reading and staggering through a field in the dark and you can keep it under your pillow coz it's small.

Electricity in a tent?

You can buy rechargable camping lanterns which are intended for this purpose (general light), you can also buy LED torches which will probably be bright enough to go to the loo. I have a rechargable head torch which has a switchable halogen and an LED in it.

oh  thank you hermes... I changed the title s I thought everyone would think oh what a boring anorak topic .
I feel a little naughty for it now.

we have had various rechargeable ones but none being very bright really.

Gas might not be advisable with children about thats all. What about one of those clip on inspection lamps (with an energy saving lamp) if you have mains?

im really sorry and feeling embarrassed that I changed the title now.
I have tried to change it back to camping lanterns but I cant now!!!

sorry folks, it was an attempt at humour... but now I feel seedy!!

I was just being impatient!!!!!!!!!!!

I am going camping soon and your replies are appreciated!!!!

lynda, moderator.

I have changed it back for you

This: http://www.surplusandoutdoors.com/ishop/877/shopscr96.html is the sort of thing we use for putting on the table when you are sitting outside in the dark, and you can hang it from the inside of the tent. Very bright but very hot so you need to take a bit of care with the kids.

Erotica, yes I'm all in favour but don't take it camping coz there's nowhere to hide it! :D Now I know why you wanted a lamp for 'reading'. :D

inspection lamp???
head lights??

ha, ha, this sounds like a trip to the doctors surgery for the inevitable smear!!! (is that okay or cringe cringe in mixed company??)

seriously, the inspection light , is that the bulb in metal frame?

Toff, I'm REALLY disappointed now.

I thought "ooh at last a decent topic......"

How wrong I was.

Hang your head in shame, young lady!!

oh well...
how about funny tales whilst camping then????

Isn't it more GSI these days rather than DIY

Don't know if you get either of these chains in Cumbria, but I bought a fairly good one from Wilkinson's the other week - Takes 4 x D-batteries and has a dim (3V) and bright (6V) setting and the handle twists so that you can hang it from your roof, stand it up, or use as a torch. Not bad for £2.99

Boyes have one that is much the same, but has a compact fluorescent bulb. Costs more at £4.95 but you will save that in batteries fairly quickly if you go regularly. Boyes also have a wind-up torch, switchable from 1- to 3-LEDs depending on what you need for £4.95 too, which is a handy thing to have in the old camping box.

Back to a very early question, if you are using a proper electric hook-up at a campsite, the length of the cable isn't going to have any bearing on a light (within reason). I've just got a new tent, and it took me about four camping trips to work out what a mystery 3-inch long zip in the inner tent is for - Extension leads from outside coming in !!
