We have a stagnent water smell in the kitchen and found 4 inches of water under the floorboards - we have looked everywhere and tested drains, airbricks, waste etc and found as soon as it rains the water appears back again.

We have now found the main roof has broken felt and wet over the cavity wall area - could water run from the top roof down the cavity wall into under the floorboards?

There is definately water in the cavity under the floorboards but wouldn't we have seen other signs eg plaster wet etc?

Any help would be appreciated.

You would tend to see dampness in the walls if the roof was the cause, but it can happen

The void under timber floors can get damp and can hold water due to high ground water table when the surrounding ground is saturated
But look for other reasons such as defective drains or surface water being diverted towards the main house walls

Have checked everything else out - does anyone know if water from the roof leak can travel all the way inside the walls and into the area under the ground floor floorboards.

4in is quite a bit.. From the roof I would think unlikely with out tell tell signs else where. Water running down cavity without out splashing on wall ties or lumps of mortar is slim.

I would be inclined to suspect water table level or pipe leakage..
Go out in the garden and dig a hole see where the level might be.
