I was at my mothers house today, and during my visit she noticed that her upstairs sockets weren't working. I looked and the circuit breaker on the consumer unit had tripped - so I reset it and all is/was well.

heres the strange bit - I get home this evening and find that MY upstairs sockets have tripped off with no apparent reason (reseted back on no problem) WHAT THE HELL is going on guys? anyone know - or is this just a very strange coincidence?

We live on the same development, about half a mile apart. The houses/wiring are less than 4 years old...

Any help would be great as its bugging the hell out of me...is some sparky playing tricks on me? could this be done remotely? ie at a main cabinet by utility workers? cheers

Ive had a thought...is it possible that something envoironmental (in the area) like pilons nearby could interfere with RCDs? they work on magnets don't they? the fact it happened to the upstairs sockets circuits (which were drawing some current (upstairs lights weren't as it was light when my mums went) so maybe somthing to do with it?

 cheers bud ;) ...it's just that I'm off on holiday tommorow and didn't fancy having that "have I left the gas on" feeling while going round Disneyland wiv the family

If magnetic disturbance was causing circuit breakers or RCD's in houses to trip  I'd be more worried about aircraft descending abruptly over your housing development, perhaps it's the british version of the Bermuda Triangle? ;)

The "Bermuda Triangle" is one of our less popular trims these days, although I still consider it very attractive. The "Hollywood Strip" and the "Brazilian" seem to be more fashionable amoung our younger clients.

no, the customers are all very charming and pleasant.

if it was EM interfering with and tripping the RCD's then wouldn't it be the DOWNSTAIRS ring that goes off.. not the upstairs.?

I'm going out on a limb here and sugesting that one of your kids has something that plugs in and trips the ring.. a game charger or radio etc..

or maybe has developed a fascination for electricity and keeps poking wire into the sockets..

my nephew pried a plug out of a wall at my nan's house once with his 50P pocket money..
big flash, half the 50p vanished and he went flying..
he was 10 at the time and was "just bored"...

Sems to me it was an MCB that triped not an RCD.

It's cold, people are starting to use their electric heaters. Maybe there is a student setting up camp with a kettle, toaster, fan heater etc.

wish you mods would delete the post rather than edit it and make it look out of context or meaningless
