hi everyone,

I'm currently installing a pocket door, and the tolerances of the room are slightly out and as a result, I have to recess it about 50mm into the slope of my loft conversion.

Unfortunately, there's a small plasterboard batten preventing me to move it any deeper.

Can I cut that piece out with a multitool in order to slide the frame in further?

Thanks!

You might need to remove more of the plasterboard to see what's what .....

That's batten's fixed to the underside of the rafters presumably?

Hi mate, yes indeed, it's attached in strips across the rafters.

Yes, I'm building a partition 90 degrees off of it that's going to follow the ceiling, but that corner, specifically, will not be connected to anything - the last 100mm of so will be floating because I can't fit it to anything in the ceiling.

Just the plasterboard with adhesive. There's nothing on the other side to attach it to as the battons don't run along. It's not load bearing, so I'm not concerned about attaching noggins under the plasterboard

What happens when people walk about in the loft/house, the floors bounce a bit and the joint between the partition and ceiling cracks then?

I'm really just looking to find out if cutting through the batten is likely to cause problems under the circumstances I describe.

Thanks

Hard to say without seeing what other battens/fixings are in the vicinity, it won't help that the partition won't be fixed either.

That plasterboard batten might be a ceiling joist so no, until you have confirmed otherwise by investigation.

Definitely not a ceiling joist, it’s just a piece of 2x1. I don’t think anyone would ever use that as a joist lol, that’s the absolute least likely scenario.

Regardless, I cut it yesterday and it’s rock solid still, not even a wiggle.
