Can I paint over French polish

Hi
I have brought a Mirror with a wooden frame which as been French Polished ( I think? ). I would like to paint it, can anyone tell me, do I just sand it down, undercoat and top coat, or is there something else I need to do.

You will need to remove all traces of the polish.
Do what you have said, when you put the primer on, you should be able to see if you have prepared it ok.
 
If it has ever had wax polish on it, then you may have difficulties, though many people used to mess about and paint old furniture and nobody noticed many problems. Otherwise, just clean it off with sugar soap, and paint. You could de-knib with fine paper, then paint.

But why do a Linda Barker on a perfectly good piece of furniture (though she's certainly dishy)?
