Can I Shorten A Ceiling Pendant Wire?

Hi,

Is there any reason why i can't shorten the wire that hangs down from a Ceiling Pendant from about 6" to about 2" or 3"?

I have an odd sloping Ceiling on my landing which makes the ceiling quite low so i wanted the light fitting to be nearer the ceiling.
I can't use a Battenholder type of fitting because of the slope and even an angled one looks odd.

the only reason people buy pendants as pre-assembled sets is because its cheaper to use the labour of a factory worker with few if any qualifications and who does the same task all day so gets quick at it than it is to use the laybour of a sparky on site.
