Hello All,
Im new to both this site and the world of DIY so apologies if I am asking stupid questions. Just bought my first house and I want to tile the bathroom floor. I pulled up the existing carpet to find chipboard underneath, can I tile directly onto this or do I need something in between, I dont want too much of a step up but am not sure if I could rip up the chipboard. Any help greatly appreciated

Thanks

Make sure there is no loose chipboard flooring, if so put in extra screw but beware of pipe/cable. The next step is to put down exterior plywood (WPB) and screw approximately every 9". Some on here use 4mm but I would go for 6mm thickness ply which doesn't help with the tile plus adhesive thickness. The very best way if you can is to rip the chipboard flooring up and put down 18mm exterior plywood as a replacement but mean you will have to move just the toilet pan, I don't know the layout of your bathroom but the bath may not have to be move. This way it will be the same level. The other option is vinyl flooring in which you can't tell the difference as some of them really look like floor tiles.
