I last painted my fence with water based wood preserver (B&Q I think) 2 or 3 years ago. It has dried out and faded. Can I use a solvent based preserver or will I have to keep using a water based one? Thanks in advance for any advice.

HI
Thanks for your reply, the reason I asked is because someone told me that the water based preserver sits on top of the wood and may prevent the solvent based one from soaking in to the wood. Do you still think it will be ok? sorry to be a pain but it's a lot of fencing lol.

If you can lay your hands on a pressure/jetwasher, you will find it strips the old water/wax stain off to bare wood. You may need a stiff brush once dry to remove any loose flakes.

It does also raise the grain and roughen the texture.
