Hi there, we’re refurbishing a Victorian building with a historical appearance. The building has a small hall, with pairs of sockets on the wall in a few places.

They’ve gone to some bother with brass fittings for the doors etc and want the socket panels to be brass too.

What they want, is the ability to conceal the wall sockets (black plastic inside the brass socket panels) with hung lids, like you get with a brass floor socket.

Basically, this sort of thing. Is it okay to mount these on the walls? I haven’t seen anything in the regulations that explicitly forbids them being used on walls, but I’d appreciate your feedback.

Do I take it that it's not Listed?

I can see absolutely no reason why not, either from the point of view of electrical common sense' or regulations. There's also no reason I can think of why you could not create your own 'brass structures' (with doors/flaps) and mount them over standard wall-mounted sockets (which themselves could be brass), should you so wish.

Can I ask John, about your opinion on us buying floor sockets and just mounting them on the wall?

This is the sort of product we’re looking at. It would mean the sockets are live (without switches) just like floor sockets!

The building is listed yep.

It's absolutely fine do what you are proposing.
In commercial premises and schools, these types of sockets are often installed in walls, commonly in corridors etc.
In fact, I've probably seen them installed in walls more commonly than I have in floors.

... and just like millions of unswitched sockets in houses all over the country. No problem. You may even be able to find ones with switches if you look around, and would be happier with switches.
The building is listed yep.
In that case, is it not possible that the Listed Building folk wikll have a view on the question you are asking us?

Kind Regards, John

dont forget that when the sockets have a plug in them there is a nice sharp flap of brass sticking out from the wall to catch your shins on ...

Ah that's fantastic guys, and thanks so much for sharing your advice and opinion on this. John, the building is listed, but the interiors are not protected (against plug sockets). However, our refurbishment is actually a quasi restoration (you should see what they did to the insides of the place during the 60's... and 70s...

bahaha thanks Sureitsoff, and to Gigagator and everyone else who commented.

You will still need a suitable backbox for them, they usually fit standard fixing centres same as normal sockets, though allow extra depth as they are quite deep.
Being listed you may need special backboxes, i dont know

You're welcome.

That's interesting, and good for you.

One of my daughters lives in a Listed cottage in a Conservation Area. Whilst the "Conservation Area people" seem generally only concerned with exterior appearance, the "Listed Buildings" ones have caused all sorts of hassle regarding (pretty trivial) 'interior issues' on occasions!.

Kind Regards, John
