Can pygmy lightbulbs be used in rooms?

Perfectly ok to use in rooms. It all depends if you want to see what you are doing in said room.

IMO they are OK for a night light or similar, but a single lamp probably won't give enough light for much else.

Other forms of lamp of the same wattage may give more light (Lumens per Watt)

If you are trying to keep your energy bills down, then fitting a CFL or LED lamp will give out far more light for less energy.

Thanks for the replies guys.

It is not really an issue of energy efficiency. It's more to do with the fact that we like the appearance of them. We are going to a nice ceiling rose, some braided cable, and an exposed bulb (no shade). So the appearance of the bulb counts for a lot. Plus the ceiling is quite low so the smaller the bulb the better in same ways....

Saying that though....

We do like the look of these types of bulbs:

....but:

a) They are damn expensive!
b) I have no idea whether they are a susceptible to blowing as normal bulbs are, or whether they are better quality and last longer. Wouldn't want them blowing too often at those kind of prices!
c) I don't know if they give out a normal kind of light, or whether they will be dim and/or give an orange kind of glow....

Anyone used them?

Cheers

Max

The pygmy bulbs are good for low level lighting but some are prone to filaments breaking if the lamp is knocked or shaken. This is because the filament is very thin.

The others will be more orangy in colour as the filaments are not designed to run white hot. This is good as it prolongs the life. But again many of these will suffer broken filaments if the lamp is subject to vibration ( such as when fitted to the ceiling under a teenagers bedroom / dance floor ).

Pygmy bulbs as the name suggests) are small - and the link gave they are only 25W

The bulbs you like are much bigger and 60W. They will light a room - the others won't. And you will not get the same effect of the glowing filament with the pygmy bulbs - they'll just look dim.

The ones you like are more expensive because they will give the effect you are after.

I have 3 of these

on a very high over stairs fitting - they look great and haven't blown. Best to put them on a dimmer as the glowing effect of the filament is best seen when not at full brightness. Might be a bit overkill for a small room though....
