I recently instaled a suspended ceiling in my bathroom. Previously i had 3 x 240v 60 downlighters.

After reading many a post regarding how much whiter 12V lighting is, I installed 5 x 12v 20W mr11 downlighters. ( at least i think thats what they are called)

To be honest, i am a little disapointed in their performance. I got them from B&Q and the spark there said they would be more than adequate for what i wanted.

I had to take the flaming things back 4 times because the cheap chinese transformer took about 4 to 5 seconds to illuminate the lamps. He exchanged this for a GOOD british made one :p

Problem now is, i cant re drill the ceiling to take bigger lamps so i was hoping there was a GOOd quality lamp available to improve the situation.

Cheers all.

So, DIY isnt as free as you thought then. 4 trips to a shed to get crp lights. Ahh well.

You had 180 wats of light before and now you've got 100W so it looks dim.
You dont say how big the room is but av bathroom could be better off with MR16 fittings, gives you a bigger angle of light too. Does mean you need to make the hole bigger - you may be limited by what the ceiling is made of - whats its construction?

LOL

Yes i guess petrol expenses ensured another £5.00 went on the price of the lamps.

The ceiling is a kind of laminate flooring but made for the ceiling. Its constructed of MDF

I understand the bit about how i previously had 180w and now 100 but i thought the fact that they were old tungsden bulbs and these are halogen would make up for it :(

I tried to enlage a previously drilled hole on a test piece of the ceiling but due to the fact that there isnt any solid center now thw harbour pilot drill it cant centralise its self and the hole drill wanders all over the place..

Forgot to say,

Room is 10' x 10'

Tip to make hole bigger:

Put large hole cutter on arbor. Then put hole cutter the size of the original hole also on the arbor. The smaller cutter will go into the existing hole while preventing drift.

Doesnt work with all hole cutters btw!

The other difference between halogen & tungsten is the halogen are quite directional light, tungsten, even tungsten spots, give a more all round light.

Ohhhhhh !!!! Clever man,

Not sure if both mine will fit in the harbour as it isnt one of those cheap ones that comes with lots of sizes.

Its the one that you purchase the various hole cutters for, You know, the ones that will go through steel. BUT i will have a play with it tomorrow and see if i can make it BIGGER

The wife will be pleased .

Holecutters with Bayonet fittings might not like it - you're applying a turning force the wrong way to the smaller saw, as it rubs against the hole. Just be careful you dont push too hard, or you may set the smaller saw free of the arbour.

Funny you should say that . . .

I have had 2 days off with not a lot to do. Pity TLC dont do 2 hour delivery, or i would have been mighty busy today!

Come on Guy's

Is someone going to stop dangling a carrot in front of my nose and tell me what Crafty does for a living?

He isn't a male escort or something is he :D
