Can you repair aluminium gutters?

We have a rotten wooden fascia to one side of our house caused my a small leak at the end of one section of the aluminium gutter. The leak is caused by a small screw hole near the top of the gutter, which only became a problem when snow weighed down the gutter at that side, against the flow.

The 2 tradesmen so far have said that all 3 sides of guttering will need replacing, even if we just had the fascia replaced. Is this correct or are they just trying to make it a big pay day? My first reaction was, why can't the rotten end of the fascia be cut off, replaced, made good, gutter re-aligned and hole filled with silicone/bitchumen. That way you wouldn't need to go near the corner (which is where they say the problem is with the joints when trying to repair aluminium).

Thanks.

The guys are more likely covering their backs rather than trying it on.
Aluminium extruded gutter is a fine idea until you need to maintain them. This is why we never go near them.

It's the same old story: Once a tradesmen starts faffing around with something associated with delicate and irreplaceable items, he gets nervous. Like with the plumber trying to change a tap on a stubborn basin etc. Trouble is the customer has someone to blame and the tradesman ends up carrying the can.

I personally would not go near it unless you were made aware that the gutter may need replacing, as these guys have said.

Your call.

Why not post pics, of the house elevation and close up views? Please indicate where the gutter and fascia are damaged.

There's no reason why various kinds of Alu guttering cannot be "repaired" or part replaced just like any other guttering.

However, there are a few installations, such as seamless Alu guttering, that can provide some difficulties to a non-specialist - seamless Alu obviously do have seams by the way.

Do you know the maker's name?

Hi, thanks for the replies.

I do not know the brand of gutters used as we inherited them from the previous owner. They are seamless aluminium but the corners look to have overlapping corner piece joints. They look a bit tatty and peeling to be honest.

I only wish I wasn't scared of ladders because I'd happily have a go myself, it can't be rocket science, and I like learning!
