My new flat has a heap of this stuff in the old loft.
can any one tell me what it is?
and is if fireproof?

Its kind of like bags of shredded cardboard.

Any ideas?

And this is what is inside the 'long bags' (ive been having a bit of a clear out so its spilled out)

I think that looks like shredded cellulose insulation, that used to be blown into voids and cavities......its what it seems - shredded cardboard and paper, and treated with a fire retardent.
I certainly haven't seen this recently, so lets hear what the others say!
John :)

thanks for that. And any more insight would be appreciated. Anyone?

Although looking at shredded celluolse online (, that stuff looks a lot more 'fluffy' than my shredded stuff.
is this the stuff you mean.. heres a piccy of the stuff I think you might be meaning
?

I was supposed to be getting the free government loft insulation.
The surveyor came round and said it was all ok, but three weeks later when the insulation firm came round, the guys went "mate, this is a chuffing fire hazzard, we aint putting loft insulation on top of that, it's more than my jobs worth".

I Would be very surprised if it isn't fire treated.

But why don't you just grab a handful, take it outside and try to burn it?

It didnt burn, but it smoulded. But regardless, the Loft Insulation company want it removed.. So it's going to be a horrible day tomorrow in the loft pulling it up! 50 years of soot, dust and spiders.. such fun!

oh no.
Well, unless you consider the beer and pizzas and I having to bribe to friends with to get mucky and cold on a sunday.

It should be worth it. This ex-Council flat does get rather chilly at the moment. and with 13" of insulatation planned to be installed for free on thursday it will make a difference.

Can i ask, Why do you ask if it'll cost me?
