i have a Candy extraction hood. The fan is blowing air back into the unit, therefore is not doing its job. My kitchen fills with smoke etc. Anybody have any experience of extraction units as I don’t seem to have much luck. It was fitted by Candy when they replaced another unit that had been wrongly advertised as having a far higher extraction rate than it actually had.

Not something I've had personally, but have you contacted Candy?

It is unlikely to be a fault of the appliance, and more likely an installation issue. however, I have a couple of suggestions for you.

If the problem has suddenly occurred and it was working as it should before, the most likely cause is that the duct that takes the air outside has become detached from the fan outlet so that the air is blown back into the room instead of being blown outside.

Or, perhaps the hood has been set to re-circulation mode (ie where the air is returned to the room after passing through a charcoal filter which absorbs cooking fumes rather than blown outside) In which case perhaps the filter hasn't been fitted, or if it is fitted hasn't been replaced recently.

If it's a recent installation your recourse should be with the person who fitted it, unless it is a filter issue which would be down to you to maintain.

Thanks Stem,
Duct all seems to be intact. There are certainly no charcoal filters inside the unit, just the mesh filters over the actual burners. Cant find a switch to flick it from recirculating to extraction, but you’ve got it absolutely right, it is recirculating not extracting. Will investigate more and report back. Cheers Stem.

There are many different Candy hoods, but generally there isn't a switch, I seem to think that if there were a charcoal filter that it would fit onto the same outlet spigot that the extract duct / pipe would be connected to. Your manual should tell you. If you don't have it, you can find it on line. There should be a plate behind one of the mesh grease filters that gives the model number.

I assume you have checked that there isn't air any air blowing outside from the outlet end of the duct, so with the chimney cover removed, if it is returning to the room, you should be able to easily feel where it is blowing from.

On mine (not Candy) the recirculation mode is set,n by a switch, but by a plastic flap that directs the air inside or outside.

Thanks for all your responses. Much appreciated. Really helpful. Managed to download a brochure for the model. IT IS A RECIRCULATING MODEL! I have never even questioned this as I ordered an extraction unit! Candy actually fitted it to replace an extraction unit!! I am beyond furious. But thanks to you all for helping me sort this and understand what is happening! I will be onto Candy immediately.
