Dontcha just love these inconclusive faults? My Cannon Henley duel-fuel top oven doesn't get hot enough (probably about 100C tops). The thermostat light stays on all the time if set above 100C, but does operate OK if set below this figure. All well-and-good - so it must be the element as the thermostat is working OK? But as elements only work or they don't - no half way house - how come the oven heats up at all? And it looks as if the grill elements double up as the top oven elements - is this the case. If so how come that the grill works 100% OK and all its elements are glowing bright red. Anyone out there familiar with this oven could give me a few pointers?

The thermostat could be faulty, ie when it gets to 100 it turns off.
It could be the t/sta probe has been moved, can you see it (the long bulb type thing. If you can check its not been moved.
THe elements could be going open circuit, when they get red, although unlikely in this case.
The elements for grill & oven may well be linked to all be in use when in oven mode.
So a few things for you to look at.

Plus check that the oven door is sealing properly ~ a strip of newspaper caught between the door and oven cavity checkd all the way round with the door closed you should feel resistance when you try and pull the paper out
if its easy to pull out or slide along sealing needs looking at.

When you use the top oven/grill as an oven , there is more than likely another element under the floor .These tend to go.

thanks for the replies. The door seal is OK - checked. The thermostat is OK - checked by heating up the probe separately and seeing if it controled the top oven - and it did! The heat - what there is of it - for the top oven is coming from the grill element so there is no under-floor element. So it must be the element! Trouble is there are only four ceramic heating bars all of which perform perfectly in the hi-speed grill mode. Could there be a second element within the heating bars for the top oven? But why does it heat up at all? It's gotta come out!

As already said, the oven may have an element under the base of the oven.
The way combined oven/grills are wired is designed to supply even heat, the grill element is a direct heat.
It is possible that when oven is selected the grill elements are connected in series (parallel when a grill). So if that is the case & the other element that supplies the base of the oven has packed up, hence no heat. It could also be the selector switch as broke.

If there is no base element I would be very, very surprised.I have never seen a Cannon / Hotpoint group top oven without one.Depending on the model access will be from the side or back.

Again, much appreciated replies boys, but 'fraid there is NO bottom element (or side)! The model is a Henley 10585G if that's any help. The heat for the top oven Definately comes from the grill elements as its too hot to handle when the top oven is switched on - although not hot enough to heat the oven properly. I've had the Hi-speed grill element tray out and all four glass tube elements check out OK and all work 100%. Spade connectors all OK. In top oven mode the elements are connected in series. If I disconnect two of the elements and shift the earth those two glow red, same with the other two, but with all four in series no red! Also i'm dropping 125V after the first two elements - so it would appear that there's not enough voltage to drive all four - but why as everything appears to be working OK? Anyone got a circuit diagram?

It's me again! And if you could see me now you'd see me tucking into a big slice of humble pie! After scouring the Net I have found out that there is indeed a bottom heating element, well hidden by insulation and accessible only from the r/h side. I've found it but not taken it out yet, but if this is in series with the upper elements this could indeed be the answer. Many thanks again for the replies. will add the result tomorrow if successful.

Brave man for feedback, as I said they get wired in series, its black heat that is required.

Just to close this chain, i've had the base element out and it has seriously had it! Split wide open for about 20% of its length. New one on order!
