Cannot remove beading on CR Smith Door. Going mad!

Hi All,

I'm trying to remove the bottom half (it has a cat-flap) panel from our UPVC door. Its about 5 years old and seems to be installed by CR Smith (all the other doors and windows are).

Every video and forum just says the same - get a scrapper in between the beading and pop the beading off and you are in!

I've made a right mess of the existing beading as I cannot get a scraper in at all. There is the tiniest of gaps (I'm not doing it on the outside where there is no gap of course) but it wont budge at all no matter which side I try it with. Its like they added a security measure to prevent people taking the beading off.

Anyone had any experience of this? I'm pulling my hair out.

The light is a bit rubbish so I've tried to get in with a torch. You'll see how I've damaged the beading in my frustration by (eventually) hitting it with a screwdriver + hammer combo.

Can't be certain but the PVC system looks like spectus, they are the most awkward beads to remove IMO but you certainly won't budge them with a screwdriver. If the corners aren't mitred then start there, if they are start in the middle of any of the beads as they all look round about the same length. You need the sharpest scraper/filling knife you can find, hammer it in the joint as you were, you should see a gap appear, keep hammering the scraper in at the same as levering, assuming your doing the top one then lever the scraper upwards while hammering downwards, don't let the scraper pop out.

The damage you've already caused can easily be repaired, I could do it all in a matter of minutes but I'm not driving up to scotland

Something I've just noticed is that the door opens outwards, long shot but check outside that its not externally beaded, the moulding will look the same but you should see a definite joint line, if that is the case then the door has been fitted the wrong way round, surveying error probably

Brilliant - thank you sir. I did check the outside before I started and its definitely the beading on the inside. The outside has no seam at all .. one continuous plastic moulded piece.

The corners are mitred so middle of the beading it is. I've been using a wall paper scraper as it very thin but I'll need to get something even thinner I think.

It needs to be quite ridged too, about an inch and half wide

Some beads really are just a pig to leaver out but they will go.
Ideally you want a collection of scrappers of various thicknesses but all about an inch wide and a second pair of hands can help.

Start with the thin scrapers to open up the gap and then get in the thicker more rigid ones, If you can work away from the center in 2 directions at the same time it should help. Once you can see the back edge of the bead clip get a thin scraper in behind it and your there.

Once you have one out the rest should be easier as you can start from the corners.

Thats some positive and pro-active customer service for you!

Rebecca may want to double check the original post though, I'm guessing hes only trying to get the panel out to put in a new one and get rid of the catflap. Not the sort of thing generally covered by anyone's guarantee.

Could just be a Christmas bonus though!
