I thought it would be a simple matter to fit a phone extension cable in the room upstairs from the BT master socket in the hall, but like most DIY projects I tackle. everything seems to go wrong!

I have tried drilling up through the hall ceiling into the alcove above the stairs in the hall outside the living room door and I have drilled from the alcove down the way and cannot get through.

Despite using a drill that must be at least 7" long I can't get right through the ceiling going up the way or the floor, going down the way. The drill is still cutting wood when it goes as far as the chuck face on the drill!

Anybody any suggestions how I could get round this?

Lift the floor board above!

Or if you have the nack, drill a hole in the ceiling, a hole in the floor board, the floor board hole being 20-25mm. Then fish with a coat hanger.

Sounds like you have drilled throught the plasterboard and into a joist. If you move left or right or into the room by two inches or so, you would find the drill would pop into the void, and to be honest, a poke with a screwdriver or bradawl would be preferable to a drill.

This is why sparkies and cable monkeys are best as these jobs ;)

I thank you for your prompt reply Sparks.

As this is a house I have recently bought and am renovating, I am not there every day, but I will definitely take your advice and tell you how I get on.

I think my problem is that with trying to do a neat job and get the cable in right in at the corner of the ceiling I have as you say run right into a joist.

I had the same problem when I was drilling a hole in the back bedroom ceiling to bring a TV aerial extension down from the loft, but common sense seems not to be my strong point :p
