capping galvinised iron water mains

i,ve just bought a 1 bed ex-council flat wich have an old sup. boiler.i am replacing it wth a combi.the water supply is a 22mm galvinised pipe.the advise i got is to get someone to freeze the pipe and cap it.very costly.can i get a compresson fitting for galv. pipes?if so then i can hire a freezing kit and do it myself

i alaways thought you had to thread galv pipe.

can you not change the whole pipe run?, better in the long run
 
If part of the supply is being used then you cannot cap it, it must be removed back to the branch, where a plug can be screwed into the branch.

Why freeze it when all you have to do is turn it off while you work on the pipe

i have'nt got access to the stopcock in the roof
