It's been many years since bunches of tone deaf kids came knocking on doors in our street on the run-up to Christmas; so long in fact that I don't even think about it. (There was a time when any unexpected ring of the doorbell within a fortnight of Christmas day was likely to go unanswered.)
My most memorable carol singing episode is from the late seventies in a block of student flats and I heard it happen on the floor below:
Knock knock. Sound of door opening --
"Away in a manger, no --"
"Hold it, hold it! let's all get in tune shall we!"
There were disgruntled mutterings followed by two lines of the carol then a brief silence.
"Is that all?"
This produced even more mutterings and a whole verse, after which there was another short silence. Then a thoroughly cheesed off little voice shouted,
"Is that all?"
"Yes that's all now clear off you cheeky s*d."
It was the best laugh I'd had all day.
