Hi. Need some advice please. I have had new carpets fitted today and the fitter has caused damage to the skirting boards…sort of expect that to a degree but has also caused damage to a newly installed fire. Very defensive and said it wasn’t a Stanley blade but it was the back of the carpet as it can be very sharp. Thoughts would be welcome as there is no way a carpet can cause this amount of damage surel? I have photos of before the carpet was installed which clearly shows no damage at all.

That is obviously damage caused by a Stanley blade. The carpet, couldn't possibly do that.

Is it a lone trader, or a company you employed to do the work?

I went to a local carpet shop and the fitter must be sub contracted too them. It’s one where you have to pay the shop for the carpet then the fitter after fitting.. I have not paid them as of yet

A good carpet fitter does not trim with a stanly they use a purpose made trimming tool .
He should also have used a chrome bolster which avoids damage to skirting .

Definitely not caused by the back of the carpet.
Although I'm wondering if the marks have come from the side of the Stanley knife body rubbing against it, rather than the blade - if he was cutting the carpet from it's underside.
Have you tried rubbing the mark lightly with a dish sponge, to see if it reduces?

It has made no difference at all

It doesn't really matter if it was the carpet or a Stanley, the fitter is responsible for damage done with either.

You'll probably need to contact the manufacturer of the fire and see if that parts available as a spare and how much it is.
