carpeting concrete floor?

Living room in my recently purchased 150+ year old cottage has bare concrete slab (which I suspect was laid in the last few years).

From reading forum and other sources it seems ideally I need to lay screed (50mm+?) on top of polystyrene insulation, before laying underlay/carpet.

Problem is that the concrete surface is only about 5mm below adjacent hallway floor and if I do the "right" things we'll have to 'climb' into the living room!

Any suggestions??

Thanks

Hopefully your newish concrete slab will have been laid on a dpm and screeded level. You can lay your carpet directly onto it. There is an option of not screeding concrete and laying polystyrene then chipboard for a final floor finish.
