I have been told that carpeting stairs is much more extensive than normal rooms.
Can anyone tell me how much it cost to carpet an average house staircase?

There's no such thing as an 'average size staircase'

Is it a staircase? a hall and staircase? a hall, stairs and landing?

Are the stairs a straight staircase? or does it have a bullnose? quarter landings? half landings? winders?

Is the carpet to be close covered or fitted as a runner? If it's a runner do you want the edges bound or finished in another way?

Is the carpet a Plain Twist? Natural loop? Velvet? Sisal or Seagrass? Woven Wilton? Patterned Axminster?or maybe a printed pattern?

Usually you would be charged on the m2 of the carpet required to be purchased for the area and an additional charge for the area including stairs (stair charge)

As a guide, I would hazzard that a minimum labour only charge for fitting stairs is probably going to be between £60 and £100.

If it's more than just the stairs i.e. Hall Stairs and Landing, then if it requires about 20m2 of carpet you will probably be paying labour fitting of between £120 and £150. There are many, many variables of course in addition to this.

Staircases are more difficult and more time consuming to fit than a standard room, that is why there are additional costs involved for these areas.

One question you may wish to ask if you have a bullnose (curved larger bottom step) is how this will be fitted. It's very common to cap and band this step (the riser and tread are two seperate pieces with the riser carpet glued in place) It's less common but arguably a better finish to hand sew the curve so the step is fitted in one piece and has the same profile of finish over the nosing as the 'waterfall' finish down the main stairs. You should'nt be charged extra for hand sewing a bullnose, but it MAY indicate the experience/quality of the fitting if the fitter says they don't finish bullnoses this way.

Thank you.

I was just trying to roughly estimate how much it was going to cost to do 1 x set of straight stairs fully covedred and 1 x set of stairs which turn and lead to the loft room.

You are probably looking at £200 as a guide, hopefully a little less.

Best to get a couple of estimates, but generally labour rates are fairly consistant and can vary depending on where you buy the carpet, the quality of the carpet and of course the complexity of the job.

If you use the £200 figure as a guide, you should'nt have any nasty suprises.
