Hi all,

Built extension that includes an outside cavity wall now inside.

I'd like to add a recessed box into the cavity first skin of bricks not blocks, to aid hiding of TV cables eventually - It's quite small needs two bricks horizontal by say 6 bricks vertically, will this impact the structure of the wall? Would a small lintel be required?

It's almost like a gas/electric meter box that inserts into the cavity, do these have some form of load bearing built into them?

TIA.

I'd always use support, even if it's just to prevent the odd half brick from falling.

Well, the box being inserted essentially provides support for a half falling brick but it's more to do with the bearing than anything is my concern.

Any opening in a wall greater than one brick should be supported - either by something in the wall or something in the opening.

Thanks Woody, this is what I was thinking. Although it's unclear how they fit the meter boxes?

I'm looking to use a angled steel like this:

Guess I'd need to put this in the front, as would be impossible from the back without taking everything out.

Use a couple of hammerfix or suchlike.

Srsly two screws is enough here? I woudn't have thought that was the case?

Is it only holding a brick up as the insert could do that, what would a house builder do with the electrical/gas meter cut outs?
