CD opening and closing on own

Hi

My DVD / CDW combi drive is opening and closing on its own, pretty much continuously.

I searched the net and it seemed that I either had a virus or a hardware problem. I ran Norton and for the first time it wouldn't complete the scan - I had an error message. I assumed this indicated a virus that was also preventing me running Norton.

I have now reformatted my Primary C drive, reinstalled windows XP, office, norton and internet software. Whilst I was installing the drive was fine - but near the end when I was installing SP1 & 2 etc. it started opening and closing all the time again.

I have done a Norton scan and it completed but didn't show any viruses. I have also disabled the drive in the System properties but it still opens and closes.

ANyone any idea what the problem is??

If you unplug the cable from the motherboard to the drive from the back of it (leave the power plug in) does it still do the same when you boot the PC up? If so it is useless, for the price of them you may as well replace it with a DVD RW drive.

I remember paying a lot of money for one a few years back. Now you can't give them away!
