Ceiling construction in integral garage

I have an integral garage with a bedroom above it. I want to put some brackets on the ceiling to hold some ladders and a couple of other bits (nothing heavy).

What is the ceiling likely to be constructed of? The finish is plaster.

Is it going to be timber joists with plaster board or something else? The house was built in 1997 if that makes any difference.

With the garage having a bedroom above, it is likely that building controls will have insisted the ceiling is constructed out of a fireproof material such as fireboard, this is a form of plasterboard that will help prevent the immediate spread of fire/smoke.
It could also be a double skin of plasterboard.
The joists are likely to be wooded.

Thanks for the reply. I guess it will be best to locate the joists and screw directly into them.

There may also be a layer of insulating material fixed to the underside of the joists, i.e. 50mm celotex.

Doubtful though as it is '97 we are talking about so there may only be a token bit of glass wool in there.

That would be a good idea, they generally 400mm apart, so if you locate one there is a good chance of finding other be using a tape measure.

That was your only realistic option whatever the ceiling was made of

If lots of fixings, the screw some battens up to the joists first, and then fix into these
