Hi Brist,
You say that your newly skimmed ceiling, now a week old has some long hairline cracks in it.First of all, what kind of ceiling is it,plasterboard, lath and plaster? If it is plasterboard, and as you said the ceiling was artexed before, then maybe the hairline cracks were there all the time and because of the texture you might not have noticed them. Now that the ceiling is flat, and you have painted it,you will see them more clearly.
Regards

It was a plasterboard ceiling. After the new skim there was no sign of cracks, after paint had dried these cracks appeared . The cracks are straight.
Thanks

Hmmm....down to the joints then, maybe the extra weight/dampness from the plaster has caused them to open

I would leave them for now and let them take their course...then try filling them and repainting...if that doesnt work you could be looking at lining the ceiling

you are not alone, brist.

i too have noticed this happening. it may be due to over trowelling the skim, maybe creating a tensile surface. this surface then expands a little when painted and subsequently cracks at the weakest point.

probably.

Or the surface tension as the plaster dries
