Hi,

I tried to replace a ceiling rose with lots of wires including a doubled sleeve one (see pics). The room also has one down lighter - both lights are controlled by a double light switch - switching each of them independently.

It was linking to a simple light with N & L wires.

Unfortunately, it is now permanently on!

Can anyone advise me what I’ve done wrong
Here’s how I wired it:

1. I left the wires that have block on them as is
2. Using WAGOs I grouped the black wires and linked them to the blue wire on light fitting
3. I used a WAGO to link the red wires and the blue wire (right side of pic) that has a red sheath on it together and linked to the brown wire on the light fitting….

I’m confused is it something to do with the sheath wire ???

Any help most appreciated

Is the photo how it was originally?

What is permanently on?

Can you show in the switch? Is the 3 core, red , yellow and blue at the switch?

You've posted a picture showing how it was previously when it was working, right?

If that's true, your new connections need to be the same as the old. In particular, you say that you have connected "the red wires and the blue wire (right side of pic) that has a red sheath on it ... and ... the brown wire on the light fitting". That's not how they are connected in your "before" photo, why have you done that? Connect the 3 red wires together, and then connect the red-sleeved blue wire with the brown to the light.

Thanks for the quick reply!
Sorry … so all black wires to blue?

Yes that’s how it was.
I’m not there now as it’s my mates house,
But I can take a pic of switch tomorrow…
The light that’s on permanently is the ceiling rose one … the down lighter works ok from the double switch.

Except you'll require a 4 way for the black and the blue flex neutrals

Thanks!
So I just connect 3 red wires but don’t wire them to my fitting??

There’s your problem. The blue with the red sheath connects only to the brown wire on the light. As above, the three reds are connected together but to nothing else.

As you can see, the three red wires were never connected to the live wire of the light. ONLY the blue wire with the red sleeve was.

im ok when there’s only 3 wires .. anymore and im lost! Thanks so much for all your advice guys …you’re the best!

For lights there are only two wires. When you unscrew a ceiling rose and 9, or 31, or 420 wires are snaked up inside there are still only two wires going to the thing that holds the bulbs, and there are two wires on the new thing. You undo the two screws on the two wires to the old thing, and you remove the wires, you put the new wires in where the old ones were and that's it. Don't get flustered by the number of wires visible; you're literally only interested in two of them

Congrats on taking a picture of how it was wired before touching anything. You wouldn't believe the number of people that don't, they just immediately remove every wire from every connector they can see, join all wires that are the same colour together and then come here complaining every time they flick the switch it trips the electrics for the house..
