Hi :D

new to these forums today so HELLO

sorry if this has been asked before but i did have a quick look on the search area and there was so much stuff i dont understand

okay, my question :?:

i'm trying to replace the ceiling rose and pendant in the upstairs landing of my girlfriends house. i removed the old fittings to the point where i have 9 wires sticking out from the hole in the ceiling. i have not marked them in any way and i realise now that was a mistake. i have three red wires, three black wires, one blue wire, one brown wire, and one earth wire.

i know the three red wires connect to the "LOOP" terminal(although I don't know in what order, how do i find out?)

i know two of the blacks go into the neutral terminal beside the blue wire from the pendant. and the other black wire(the live switch wire i believe) goes into the live terminal beside the brown wire from the pendant. again i need to know a way to identify the black wires.

the earth obviously connect to the earth terminal. easy.

 BUT, where does the brown and the blue wires coming from the ceiling go?? i've looked at several wiring diagrams on the internet and on the packaging of the fittings and they are simply not there. does any one know what they are are where they go. there isn't another space in the fitting for them to connect into so i can only assume that they connect to the SAME terminals as the brown and blue wires from the pendant. but i could be completely wrong.

please help me, thanks:cool:
sincerely
Paul

I don't know, its not normal to have a two core flex there... have a look in the loft to see ehere it goes (TV dist amp I suspect)

I trust that your one earth is really the earths of all three T&E cables (the ones that have one red, one black and a bare earth in the middle) in one piece of sleaveing?

Adam, I know nothing about wiring. what is a dist amp?

T&E ?

you lost me entirely with the second paragraph, sorry mate

you referred to those brown and blue wire as core flex? can you expand a bit on that please?

TV dist amp = distrubution amplifier for your television aerial to let you have multiple tv points around the house

T&E = twin and earth http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Images/Products/size_3/CA1GH.JPG normal cable used for house wiring, it is however normally red and black in most installtions, only work done since april 2004 might have used the new blue and brown stuff, before then it was only flex that was blue and brown (I guess I kinda assumed that you had been in the house a while, but if that is not the case then it the blue and brown could be new T&E)

so basically i'm stuck if i dont know where to connect those blue and brown wires? which i dont

if its on the landing can you follow it in attic to see where it goes? from my experience spots in bathroom light in attic tv amp (as suggested) intruder alarm panel power shower pump spur in airing cupboard for new combi or underfloor heating in bathroom etc.

The pair or red/black wires that came the switch can be tested with a continuity tester or a multimeter in low resisttance range.
The other red/black wire pairs normally go to the other lighting points (ceiling roses) on the same floor.
