Recently moved into an old house where one of the rooms has a sagging old lathe and plaster ceiling which is uneven in most places,so is it easier to take down, or batten up the old ceiling with wooden battens and then new plasterboard on top.Any suggestions would be grateful.

Both methods have their advantages. Stripping out the old ceiling gets rid of the old damaged ceiling but is very messy and all that debris has to be disposed of.

Cross battening is a solution, assuming you have enough ceiling height to allow for this. You could then postition the new battens to suit the widths of the plasterboard sheets, this minimises board cutting.

Are the ceiling joists deep enough though, you'll have to use reasonable length screws througn the battens to take the weight. You may hit pipes or cables as these are unseen. Cables especially, will be through the center of the joist depth. Something to consider?
