You can usually tell a cell number from a land line number here in the US.....is there a way to tell in the UK?? Really need to know. Thanks :)

ok.. to clarify tho. land lines always start with 07....or do cell/mobiles

and the 44....goes at the beginning?

also...if I am using Vonage, and it is handled as a local call....is it just the plain number.....it's not that I havent looked...I just cant find it.

Sorry,

Land lines start with 0? depending on location
Mobiles always start with 07
Free phones 0800
Local rates 0845
Porn line start with 09 (I Think ;) )

And from the USA you drop the 0 and use + 44 or 0044

..and as for vonage..pass

its not just adult lines that begin with 09, its premium rate lines that begin with 09

adult lines are just one of them

some radio / tv stations have 09......... for competitions

The UK landlines begin with 01 or 02 .

From the US you drop the "0" and replace it with + 44

Then there are freefone 0800 or 0808 numbers.

Then there are non geographic lower rate 0845

and higher rate 0870 numbers.

The 07 are either mobile or higher still non geographic like our 0700 fax number which series can also be "follow me" numbers.

Thats the most common series you will encounter!

The important thing to remember is in the UK the caller pays, never the receiver! Calls to mobiles are much more expensive than calls to landlines.

thanks guys.....got it figured out.

Btw....if you use the Vonage system, all calls from US to UK are treated like local calls....no charges/fees attached.
It just had me stumped as to how to place the call....didnt figure out until later that the 44 is the country code and since you cant call a mobile phone, couldnt figure out if the number was a land line.
Got it sorted now, though. Thanks again!! :D :D

Course you can. A mobile phone no is 07 nnn nnn nnn so you just dial +44 7 nnn nnn nnn

However, you can't call a freephone no from out of country (0800 nnn nnnn)

Or did you mean Vonage won't call them?

yeah, the latter.
Oh and something else I noticed...I had a couple of "oops"calls....the recordings in UK are very very polite and very explicit....and both had male voices....

Unless it is a "free" phone number, in which case the receiver pays!

You mean the "you have dialled an incorrect number" on the BT exchanges etc? I thought they only used laydee's voices. Never heard a man on a BT recorded message before. Then again i only ever use 1471.
