Around this area in Wales many of the slate roof verges are finished with mortar. The slates finish flush with the rendered gable end then a strip of what looks like sharp sand mortar built up.
The strip is about 8 inches wide, 2 inches deep and overhangs the gable end by an inch or so.
I believe some people replace the mortar with ridge tiles but what about replacing the original mortar.
You could fix a batten to the vertical gable end but what about one to retain the mortar on the slates? Assuming Gripfast didn't exist in those days perhaps they held a short length of batten in place?
Anyone got any ideas?
