Central Heating Banging

Hi all any ideas on a problem with my parents Central Heating?

It has recently started banging and clanging really loudly like someone is hitting the pipes with a spanner ?

Also the expansion tank is full with steaming hot water which obviously is far from ok

Any help would be greatfully received as its driving them mad with worry now

Sounds like a failed control thermostat and/or pump. This can be dangerous, especially if it is an old boiler with no limit thermostat.

Switch it off and get it fixed - please, and do it NOW!

Could be the boiler stat, or the pump, or an airlock, or a blockage. I don't loose a whole lot of bets when I guess sludge with this description.
