We have a small rad at the top of our stairs that is always first to heat up and hottest one. The house doesn't need a rad there but when I turned it fully off we got an intermittent banging from the central heating. Opening one of the valves very slightly stopped it and it hasn't returned.

Problem is my wife wants to get rid of the rad and I'm worried if I take it off and cap the pipes under the floor we'll have a banging central heating that we can't stop.

Anyone got any ideas for finding the issue and fixing it?

thanks
Adam

If the rest of the radiators have thermostatic valves on remove
one of the thermostatic valve heads and that should sort it.
It sounds like this radiator is the only radiator allowing a bypass
between flow and return for the boiler to keep circulating when all your other thermostatic valves have shut down because the house is warm.
