there is a long copper length of pipe apx 16" leading from the top of the pump which is next to the hot water tank, at the top there is a screw nut, after bleeding all the radiators, i undid the screw nut, and air escaped, when water started to spill out, i tightened the nut, can someone confirm that this is for bleeding the pump?, someone has told me there is supposed to be air inside this pipe, as it stops the pump from being noisey?

You did the right thing. :) This vertical section of pipe is there to collect air that would otherwise continue circulating. When refilling system, you need to vent this air off from time to time, as you have done.

the pump has a screw on the side. this can be undone to release any air in the pump
