I am wanting to move my central heating thermostat but I am not sure of the cable specification.The existing cable seems to be the usual twin(blue/brown)with a grey outer sheath. I realize it is live 240v,could it be of 2.5 strenth similar to appliance cable or is it special cable.

Assuming your heating system is a boiler and not something else?
Check the fuse in the feed to your boiler. It should be 3 or 5 amp.
If so you will be OK to use 1.5mm² cable to the thermostat.
Be sure to only run the cable in safe zones.
